So, let me tell you the origin and WHY students get such long summer holidays. Long summer holidays started only in the 20th century. Previously, schools slot some short breaks between quarters, just like Malaysia. In the 1870s, education wasn't compulsory. The schools wondered why they should keep the school open for the whole year when kids don't even attend classes. Doctors felt that kids were too stressed out for so many days at their desks. It was too much education, they argued that it could weaken a child's health. Schools picked summer for long breaks as the poorly ventilated school buildings could barely take the heat waves. Community leaders worried that hot humid weathers could easily spread diseases. Wealthy urbanites also usually travel during the hottest seasons.
Some countries have shorter summer breaks as the school's worried that the kids will instantly forget what they've learned. American students usually spend 180 days(wow) in school, Asian students usually spend 240-250 days in school.
So, this is all I know! Stay tuned for my next post!
